Aleksandra Vrebalov
My Desert, My Rose
from 7 August 2024, Musikhuset København
program notes
Aleksandra Vrebalov (b. 1970) has created over 100 works for the concert hall, opera, modern dance, and film. Her work explores themes of cultural memory and mixes global influences with her own Serbian heritage. The prolonged wars during her youth in Yugoslavia left her especially fascinated with what she calls the "friction between the public and the private side of heroism.”
To inspire her creative process, Vrebalov paints images, colours, and textures for her compositions, as well as developing stories. Her 2015 string quartet My Desert, My Rose is, in her words, “a journey of four characters who start in distinctly different places and, after a long search and occasional brief meeting points, end up in the same space, time, and language.”
